Why Is There Chlorine in Your Water?

filling a glass with water under the tap

If you’re getting your water from a public supply, chances are it’s been treated with chlorine. Chlorine is a commonly used chemical to disinfect water and kill harmful pathogens like bacteria, viruses and cysts in it. It’s been used for over a hundred years, and still remains one of the most popular ways of disinfecting water.

Chlorination is a chemical disinfection method which uses a variety of chlorine types and substances that contain chlorine. This causes water to oxidize and become disinfected, making it potable.

By chlorinating water, common waterborne pathogens can be removed, preventing diseases like typhoid and cholera. It does this by damaging the pathogen’s cell membrane, then entering the cell and attacking its respiration and DNA activity. The cell cannot survive this attack and subsequently dies.

Is Chlorinated Water Safe to Drink?

The general consensus is that small amounts of chlorine in drinking water isn’t harmful for health. Chlorine levels up to 4mg/L is considered safe and unlikely to affect your health, according to the EPA.

However, chlorine doesn’t remove all microbes in water. Chlorine doesn’t inactivate all pathogens. Some protozoan cysts, like Cryptosporidium and Giardia, can resist the effects of chlorine. If there are protozoan cysts in the water supply, another method of purification should be used to remove them.

Chlorine also adds a noticeable smell and taste to water, which can make drinking water unpleasant. While some people are used to this and actually like it, others may find it unpalatable.

Any amount of chlorine over 1mg/L will negatively impact the smell and taste of water, giving a strong chemical feel to it.

Some other issues connected with chlorine include inhaling vaporized chlorine in a hot shower, which can irritate your eyes, sinuses, trigger allergies and cause asthma.

High chlorine concentrations in the shower can also cause dry and irritated skin.

Chlorine is also harmful for fish, aquatic animals, reptiles and amphibians because they absorb water directly into their bloodstream. It’s best to filter out chlorine from your water before introducing these animals to your water.

Chlorine doesn’t harm other types of pets, like cats and dogs, or plants.

How Do You Remove Chlorine from Water?

Water filter cartridge

There are a few different ways that chlorine can be removed from water supply. These are:

Carbon Filtration

Carbon filtration is the most effective and popular method of chlorine, taste and odor removal. There are two main types of carbon filters – activated carbon block (ACB) and granulated activated carbon (GAC).

Of the two, ACB is the more effective choice and has higher efficiency, but it restricts water flow compared to GAC. This is why GAC is the preferred choice for shower filters.

Carbon filtration can remove up to 98% of chlorine from water, depending on the quality of the filter. These filters work quickly, using a chemical reaction which changes the chlorine molecules to a chloride.

Some other benefits of carbon filtration include lower cost and easy availability, all of which make them the best option to remove chlorine.

Distillation

Distillation is another way to remove chlorine but is less popular. Distillation are better suited just for drinking water and are typically a countertop product.

When you pour water into a distiller, it heats up the water until it vaporizes then directs and collects the vapor in a container. When the vapor condenses, you have pure contaminant free drinking water.

Distilled water is considered the purest water, but it’s also demineralized and contains no nutrients that water typically holds. If you don’t mind this fact and the somewhat flat taste of distilled water, it can be a very good choice.

Reverse Osmosis

Reverse osmosis (RO) systems are famous for removing almost all impurities from the water, including chlorine. But the point to note is that the chlorine removal occurs during the carbon filtration stage.

Most RO systems have at least 2 stages of carbon filtration, using ACB and GAC mediums. This is where the chlorine removal occurs and not during the reverse osmosis membrane filtration stage.

A RO system is a great choice if you want to target the removal of almost all the impurities in the water supply. If you only want to remove chlorine, it’s more economical to choose a high-quality carbon filtration system.

Look for NSF Certification

NSF is an American product testing, inspection and certification organization accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI).

An NSF/ANSI certification means that the product has been tested and meets the expectations outlined by NSF International.

NSF standard 42 relates to chlorine filtration. This standard is outlined as follows:

Filters are certified to reduce aesthetic impurities such as chlorine and taste/odor. These can be point-of-use (under the sink, water pitcher, etc.) or point-of-entry (whole house) treatment systems.”

All the products we’ve listed above meet NSF 42 expectations. However, not every good filter has an NSF certification. Smaller companies may not be able to afford this expensive certification but may still offer high-quality chlorine removing filters.

Even so, having the NSF 42 certification gives you the peace of mind that the product has been tested to filter out chlorine by independent testing labs.

Chlorine in Water – FAQs

Plumber installing water filter
1- Can chlorinated water make you sick?

If there are protozoans in your water, there’s a likelihood that you can get sick from drinking the water. This will not be because of the chlorine itself, but due to the microbes that are resistant to chlorine.

2- Can I remove chlorine by boiling water?

Yes, but only if your water contains free chlorine and not chloramine. By boiling your water for 15 to 20 minutes, you can remove the chlorine from your water. Boiling will also improve the taste and smell of the water.

3- Will my plants die if I use chlorinated water on them?

Chlorine in small amounts aren’t likely to harm plants. You can water your plants with regular chlorinated tap water, and they should be fine. Of course, the key here relates to small amounts. Higher concentrations of chlorine can damage plants, animals and humans.

4- Do water filters remove chlorine?

It depends on the type of water filter, but in general, if there is carbon filtration, the unit should be able to remove chlorine. Different filters have varying capacities of chlorine removal, ranging from 92% to 98%. Some of the best filters can remove up to 99.99% of chlorine.

5- Can a water softener remove chlorine?

No, a water softener only conditions water, removing calcium and magnesium from it. It doesn’t remove chemical contaminants or other types of impurities. A water softener used in conjunction with a whole house filtration system is a comprehensive solution for hard water as well as contaminants in water.

6- Are water chlorine-based purification tablets harmful?

Water purification tablets are used around the world for emergency or survivalist situations, as well as by outdoor enthusiasts. They offer an excellent solution for killing pathogens from your water in an affordable, efficient and easy way. However, some tablets are not recommended for long-term use, with a cap of around 6 weeks.

The Bottom Line

Chlorine in water can be an unpleasant experience, impacting the taste and smell. While the chlorine concentrations used for public water supplies is considered safe and meet EPA standards, we can all agree that the fewer chemicals get into our bodies, the better.

By choosing a high-quality water filtration solution, you can tackle the chlorine in your water, removing up to 99% or more from your water supply.
